Open Source tools and technolgies are playing an increasing role in modern software development. This is in part - and understandably - due to the low cost of implementation.

However, it also shows that software development is a creative and highly intuitive process that benefits strongly from the informal atmosphere of an open source setting. Even large enterprises from the IT sector have come to realize this and have started to sponsor Open Source projects, or even put  their own development projects under an Open Source umbrella. The Eclipse project is one prime example.
